NO. 24 DAYTON SUFFERS FIRST DEFEAT AT SLU
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The No. 24 University of Dayton men’s soccer team battled Atlantic 10 foe No. 22 Saint Louis on Saturday night in St. Louis and left with a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Billikens.
After a slow start to the Atlantic 10 season in the first weekend, the Flyers were looking to get back on track in their first road game in a month at Saint Louis.
The host Billikens took the initial lead in the 29th minute on a goal by Kingsley Bryce, his first of the year. That put the Flyers down 1-0 on the road.
That score remained heading into halftime with Dayton trailing in its first away contest since Sept. 20.
The second half began with the Billikens pushing the tempo offensively. The Flyers held off the assault while making counter attacks of their own.
In the 65th minute, Saint Louis pushed their lead to 2-0 after a goal by Raymond Lee inside the Flyer 18-yard box.
The Billikens would not let up as they scored their third goal of the game just seven minutes later with Bryce recording his second goal of the game.
The Flyers managed to get a goal by in the 88th minute when junior Amass Amankona controlled a rebounded shot by senior Eddie Jones and scored the first goal for UD. It was Amankona’s fifth goal of the year.
Saint Louis proved to be too much for the Flyers with Dayton suffering its first loss of the season, 3-1.
The road contest caused issues for the Flyer offense, despite Dayton out-shooting Saint Louis 18-14 and having twice as many corners as the Billikens.
The Flyers (10-1-2, 0-1-2 A-10) will return to action on Friday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. for Senior Night. Dayton will say goodbye to the eight seniors of the 2013 class in a showdown with Duquesne.
