Sophomore Samuel Adjei scored the contest's only goal on an assist from junior Alvaro Torrecilla. Torrecilla crossed the ball into the box and Adjei netted it on a shot from the far post. The goal was the third this season for Adjei and the sixth of his career.
Despite trailing 18-7 in shots over the match, Iona was able to keep host Rutgers off the scoreboard with solid defense and three saves by freshman goalkeeper Borja Barbero. Adjei's game-winner came in the 81st minute. Kevin McMullen saved three in front of the net for Rutgers.
Iona faces another tough test on Sunday, taking on nationally ranked St. John's in the tail-end of the Rutgers/St. John's Classic. The Gaels and the No. 14 Red Storm square off at 8:00 pm.
