No. 3 Florida State Defeats Orange in OT
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women’s soccer team played evenly with No. 3 Florida State for more than 94 minutes before the Seminoles netted the game’s only goal for a 1-0 victory at the SU Soccer Stadium. Florida State remains unbeaten and is one of only four schools without a loss this season.
The game-winning goal came 4:17 into the first overtime session. Megan Campbell threw the ball from the left sideline into the box where Dagny Brynjarsdottir took it off a bounce and headed into the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season.
“I feel for these players,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon after the heartbreaking loss. “We let the ball bounce (off the throw in) and they have big, tall players who will sacrifice whatever they have to get on the other end of it. We lost our marks.”
Neither team could take advantage of its scoring opportunities during regulation. The Seminoles (11-0-3, 6-0-2) applied the offensive pressure early in the contest, recording three shots in the first 7:14 of the match. Syracuse’s best scoring chance came in the 22nd minute when sophomore Jackie Firenze (Baldwinsville, N.Y) took a through ball and rifled a shot at the goal, but it went just above the crossbar. The Orange (5-8-1, 1-6-1) defense successfully defended against three corner kicks in the first half, and senior goalkeeper Brittany Anghel (East Meadow, N.Y.) recorded two saves as the teams were tied 0-0 at intermission.
Florida State again applied offensive pressure to start the second half, earning three corner kicks in the first 12 minutes of play. Freshman Stephanie Skilton (Auckland, New Zealand), who scored three goals in Syracuse’s win at Pittsburgh, tried to give her team the lead off a free kick in the 71st minute, but FSU goalkeeper Kelsey Wys was there for the save. The Seminoles had the final chance to score in regulation, but Anghel stopped Brynjarsdottir’s shot with less than a minute remaining to send the game to overtime.
Florida State recorded 14 shots and eight corner kicks, while the Orange posted four shots. Anghel finished with six saves, while Wys had two saves in her league-leading ninth shutout of the season.
Syracuse returns to the SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 13 when it hosts Miami at 12 p.m. Admission is free of charge.
