NO. 3 SEED FLYERS TAKE DOWN HAWKS 2-1 IN OT
DAYTON, Ohio -- The University of Dayton women's soccer team (10-8-2) avenged an early-season loss to Saint Joseph's (11-9-0) with a 2-1 overtime win over the Hawks Thursday night at Baujan Field in the first round of the 2014 Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship.
The Hawks dealt UD one of its two conference losses this season, a 3-1 setback on Oct. 10 in Philadelphia. The Flyers used it as motivation and it showed as UD outshot SJU 28-12 for the match, including 4-0 in overtime. Sophomore Erin O'Malley scored the golden goal in the 96th minute, off an assist from junior Nicole Waters. The assist was the 16th of the season for Waters, just one off her UD single season record of 17 she amassed last year, which led the nation.
Junior Ashley Campbell scored her 14th goal of the season in the ninth minute to give UD a 1-0 lead. SJU's Emily Gingrich answered with her 14th of the season, a world-class goal that hit under the crossbar and across the line in the 12th minute with the assist coming from Jill Root.
Redshirt junior Heather Betancourt had five saves in goal for the Flyers and improves to 4-0-1 on the season.
Prior to UD's match vs. VCU, a rematch of UD's season finale double overtime 1-1 tie, No. 1 seed La Salle will face No. 4 seed George Washington at 5 p.m. at Baujan Field.
