No. 4 UCSD Finishes Seven-Match Road Trip Undefeated
UCSD will enter its first home match on Sunday with a 5-0-2 overall record and a 4-0-1 conference clip. CSUDH drops to 4-3 overall and 2-3 in the CCAA.
"Up to this point we've been playing well, we just need to keep on doing that," said UCSD head coach Brian McManus. "Hopefully we get started on the right foot Sunday to settle down and win some home games."
Ellen Wilson scored on a corner kick off a service from Hayley Johnson in the 12th minute to make the difference in the match. Johnson sent a high, curling ball into the mixer and Wilson beat the CSUDH goalkeeper to the ball before heading it in. The assist marked Johnson's fifth off a corner kick this season.
UCSD out-shot CSUDH, 9-8, but the Toros were able to out-shoot UCSD 6-2 in the second half. Kristin Armstrong made a couple strong saves to keep the clean sheet and the defensive line stuck-in to keep CSUDH off the board.
"I thought our goalkeeping and defensive play this evening was really good," said McManus.
Sarah McTigue, Izzy Pozurama and Danielle Dixon led the Tritons with two shots each. Armstrong made a pair of saves in goal.
"The Home Depot Center was a lovely place to play, but the field is so big," said McManus. "It's 120 [yards long] by 75 [yards wide] and it might be a little big for the way we play."
UCSD will host Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday at noon at Triton Soccer Field. It will mark the Tritons' first home match this season. CSUSB is the only team to force a tie with the Tritons in CCAA play this season. The Coyotes and Tritons battled to a 1-1 tie on September 11.
