No. 5 Demon Deacons Draw 0-0 with Virginia Tech

September 29, 2011

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The last two regular season matches between Wake Forest and Virginia Tech had produced 13 combined goals, but Thursday’s meeting was quite the opposite as the fifth-ranked Demon Deacons and the Hokies played to a 0-0 tie at Spry Stadium.

The Deacons stayed unbeaten in ACC play, moving to 10-1-1 (3-0-1 ACC), while the Hokies earned their first result of the conference campaign to improve to 8-3-1 (0-2-1 ACC).

“Defensively, keeping a shutout was one of our goals for tonight’s game,” said defender Jackie Logue. “We had some offensive chances that we just needed to do a better job of capitalizing on.”

Wake Forest was the dominant offensive side for most of the match, outshooting Virginia Tech 23-9, including 11-2 in the second half, but was unable to finish on the final ball. Hokie goalkeeper Dayle Colpitts made 10 saves to keep the Deacons off of the board. It was the first time that the Deacs had been shut out all season.

“As a team, I think we kind of settled for the shots from far out instead of making the extra pass and getting closer to goal and breaking them down,” said Logue. “They packed it in and made us shoot from long range, and that definitely hurt us.”

Aubrey Bledsoe posted her seventh shutout of the season in net for Wake Forest, making three saves. Her seven clean sheets this season are tied with Amanda Barasha and Laura Morris for third on the Wake Forest single-season charts, and her 10 career shutouts moved her in a tie for the fifth-most in school history.

Rachel Nuzzolese and Katie Stengel took seven shots apiece to lead all players. Wake Forest’s back line smothered Hokie star Kelly Conheeney, holding her to only two shots.

The Deacons had their first chance in the 16th minute. Katie Stengel beat her defender on the left and then passed to Nuzzolese, who played a ball into the box towards Berry, but Hokie defender Julia Goldsworthy got there first to sweep away the danger.

Kelsey Loupee almost gave the Hokies the lead in the 32nd minute, finding a failed Wake Forest clearance and cracking a shot from the top of the box that rattled the right post.

Wake Forest’s Stengel ripped a bouncing shot from 24 yards that Colpitts could not hold onto in the 53rd minute, and Nuzzolese ran onto the rebound but put her follow-up attempt high.

The Demon Deacons came inches away from going ahead in the 59th minute. Jackie Logue played a chipped through ball and Stengel ran past her defender to gather it. Stengel attempted to chip Virginia Tech’s Colpitts, who was charging off her line, but the attempt landed on top of the net for a goal kick.

Stengel had another chance in the 72nd minute. Park placed a through ball that gave Stengel an open look at goal, but she put her shot high of the mark. A minute later, Stengel was fouled at the top of the box and Kim Marshall and Jordan Feger combined on the free kick, with Marshall taking a shot that Colpitts snuffed out easily.

With the score tied at 0-0 through 90 minutes, the game headed to overtime. Shannon Mayrose looked to give the Hokies the win scarcely two minutes into the extra period, firing a shot from the top of the box that went just right of the goal.

Stengel had a go herself in the 104th minute, collecting a throw-in from Jackie Logue and taking a shot from the top of the box that Colpitts smothered.

Wake Forest will continue ACC play on Sunday when No. 13 Virginia comes to Spry Stadium for a 1 p.m. fixture. The Demon Deacons will honor seniors Chelsea Allen, Jordan Feger and Amanda Howell prior to the match as part of their Senior Day celebrations.
