No. 5 UCSD Remains Unbeaten with Tie at No. 19 CSUSB
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Freshman Cassie Callahan scored the first goal of her Triton career as the No. 5 UC San Diego women's soccer team tied No. 19 Cal State San Bernardino 1-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Callahan won a tackle near midfield in the 50th minute and forced pressure on the Coyote defense by dribbling towards goal. Noticing that no CSUSB defenders had stepped in to close the space, Callahan sailed-in a shot over the CSUSB keeper's head from about 25 yards away to tie the match 1-1.
"(Cassie) has been working hard this year and she got a goal when we needed it today," said UCSD head coach Brian McManus.
The first-year Triton is currently tied for the team lead with 10 shots and she has played the most minutes (367) of any offensive player for UCSD. She played the entire 90 minutes on Friday against Cal State L.A. and posted another 89 minutes Sunday afternoon.
Callhan's goal helped the Tritons stay undefeated in 2011 with a 2-0-2 overall and 1-0-1 CCAA record. CSUSB drops to 2-1-1 overall and 0-1-1 in CCAA play.
The Triton defense gave up their first goal of the season in the 23rd minute, snapping a 313-minute shutout streak to open 2011. However, the back line held strong as goalkeeper Kristin Armsrong was forced to make just two saves the rest of the way. Triton defenders Hayley Johnson, Ellen Wilson and Sara Spaventa played all 110 minutes of Sunday's match.
"Our defenders do a good job of not giving other teams the chance to control the ball," said McManus. "If you don't have the ball then you can't win."
In three matches against teams in the Top 25 so far in 2011, the Tritons are 2-0-1. UCSD beat then-No. 10 Seattle Pacific and No. 11 Cal State L.A. in its previous two contests.
Senior midfielder Anne Wethe went down with an upper body injury and was replaced by Britnee Chesney. The junior transfer played well in Wethe's absence the rest of the way.
"We are going to have to make some adjustments heading into next week," said McManus. "I think Britnee played well and will fit in if we miss Wethe for a bit."
UCSD will continue CCAA competition on the road next weekend as they head to San Francisco State and Cal Poly Pomona. The Tritons will face the Gators at 3:00 p.m. on Friday before clashing with the Broncos at 11:30 a.m on Sunday.
