No. 5 Warhawks Come From Behind To Win
The fifth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team came from behind twice to defeat the University of Dubuque 3-2 Wednesday night in Dubuque, Iowa. UW-Whitewater improves to 14-2 while the Spartans fall to 10-4-1. This is the third consecutive season that Head Coach Tony Guinn's team has reached the 14-win mark. The Warhawks are two wins shy of tying the school record for wins set back in 2002.
The Warhawks found themselves in a hole early, conceding a goal in the third minute of play.
Dylan Hottsmith (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) attempted to tie the game in the fifth minute, but Spartan goalkeeper Riley Jensen made the save. Two more shots on goal in the 23rd minute of play were turned away by Jensen as the Spartans clung to a 1-0 lead.
Hottsmith evened the score in the 25th minute when he capitalized on a pass from Justin Stanko (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North).
The lead was short-lived as the Spartans found the back of the net again in the 32nd minute.
Zach Manibog (West Chicago, Ill./St. Charles East) had a great opportunity with three minutes remaining before halftime, but Jensen again made the save and Dubuque led 2-1 at the half.
The Warhawks' second comeback came in the 71st minute when Sam Novak (Milton, Wis./Milton) won a scramble for the ball in the box and knocked in his fourth goal of the season.
Over the course of the next nine minutes the teams traded possession and shots, but neither had a quality opportunity until the 80th minute of play. The Warhawks earned a corner that Derick Achombom(Bamenda, Cameroon/Government Bilingual High) elected to take. Achombom placed a perfect all in the box and senior captain Jordan Wilkins (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) headed it in for his first goal of the season and a 3-2 Warhawk lead.
Dubuque scrambled to tie the game in the waning moments, but the Warhawk defense remained stout and held on to victory.
UW-W outshot Dubuque 15-10 in the match and earned 10 corner kicks to the Spartans' three.
Chris Lucatorto (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) came on in relief of Alex Buchman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford) at halftime and made one save to earn his first win of the season.
Saturday the Warhawks will travel to UW-Oshkosh for a 7 pm match. UW-W will wrap-up regular season play next Wednesday at UW-Platteville.
