No. 6 Aztecs Earn 3-1 Victory Over Wyoming
The No. 6/13/7 San Diego State women's soccer team used a balanced offensive attack to up its unbeaten streak to nine games with a 3-1 victory over Wyoming on Friday evening at SDSU Sports Deck. With the win, the Aztecs improve to 15-1-1 and 5-0 in MW play, while the Cowgirls drop to 7-7-2 and 0-4-1 in conference play.
Freshman Victoria Barba, who entered the contest with one career goal, tallied the game-winner for SDSU at the 58:07 mark on a successful penalty shot. It marks Barba's first collegiate game-winning goal. The Aztecs also received scores from senior Tiffany Hurst in the 30th minute and one from senior Sarah Halverson at the 73:01 mark.
While it was SDSU who was ultimately victorious, Wyoming managed to tally the first goal of the contest at the 4:32 mark. After a foul was called on the Aztecs, Liz O'Reilly sent in a free kick toward the box that found freshman Mollee Ramsay at the right time for an early 1-0 Cowgirl advantage.
SDSU was still in control of game though, as it controlled the possession and kept Wyoming goalkeeper Courtney Merkle busy. After four consecutive shots early on in the contest, the Aztecs connected on their fifth straight attempt. It was Hurst who scored, marking her fourth goal this season, after taking a pass from junior Carli Johnson and connecting to knot the score at 1-1.
The remainder of the first half was a back-and-forth affair, but San Diego State held a 6-3 advantage in shots (3-1 in shots on goal) at halftime.
The Aztecs wasted little time out of the gate in the second half as they notched three straight attempts before a foul was called in the box. The play resulted in a penalty try and Barba stepped up and delivered a great shot for what would ultimately be the game-winner.
SDSU still kept its foot on the gas despite holding a one-goal lead. After being subbed into the game at the 70:18 mark, Halverson used fresh legs to her advantage as she scored her fourth goal of 2012 less than three minutes later off a nice assist from senior Rachel McGlinchy.
On the game, SDSU outshot the Cowgirls by a 14-3 margin (8-1 in shots on goal), including holding Wyoming to zero shots in the second half, and also won the possession battle by a 72-28 margin. Redshirt sophomore Rachel Boaz played all 90 minutes in goal en route to her 15th win of 2012.
The Aztecs resume Mountain West play on Sunday as they welcome Air Force for AYSO Appreciation Day. The conference showdown is set for a 12 p.m. PT start at SDSU Sports Deck.
