Newton, Mass. – In an exciting game between two nationally ranked teams, the No. 6 Boston College women’s soccer team tied No. 8 UCF, 2-2, in a non-conference battle on Sunday afternoon in front of 337 fans at the Newton Soccer Field.

Boston College is now 5-0-2, with the two ties coming against then No. 4 ranked Stanford and now No. 8 UCF. UCF is now 5-1-1.

The Eagles went up 1-0 behind a great individual effort from Kristen Mewis. She received a pass from Rachel Davitt at about the 30, she dribble through a couple of UCF defenders and ripped a left-footed shot to the far post for a BC 1-0 lead.

The goal by Mewis extends her point scoring streak to seven games. The holds the program record with 11 consecutive games of scoring a goal or assists.

 

BC held a 1-0 lead at the half and had a 7-6 edge in shots.

 

The second half, the play continued to go back-and-forth. Both teams had great chances but neither could convert.

 

UCF tied the game in the 68^th minute when Nicolette Radovcic ran onto a ball in the box. Radovcic placed the ball right under the crossbar for a 1-1 tie. The Knights went ahead 2-1 four minutes later when Tisha Jewell set up Kristina Trujic who placed a shot into the far post for the lead.

 

The Eagles did not give up. Mewis was dropped just outside the box and the Eagles had a set piece from 24 yards out. Mewis ripped a shot on goal but the UCF goalkeeper could not handle it cleanly. Junior Kate McCarthy attacked the loose ball and deflected the ball into the goal for a tie game with 10 minutes to play.

 

Both teams had chances as Jewell’s offering was stopped by BC keeper Alex Gaul in the 81^st minute. BC senior Victoria DiMartino had a chance inside the box in the 87^th minute and her shot just went wide.

 

To open the overtime, Boston College had a chance when Stephanie McCaffrey was dropped at the right outside the box. Mewis set up for the set piece and ripped a shot that just went high just two minutes into the first overtime period. Freshman McKenzie Meehan had a shot from 20 yards out that just skid wide of the goal.

 

In the second overtime, DiMartino almost ended the match when her shot hit the far post just three minutes into the play. UCF came back when Ashley Nicol broke into the box, one-on-one against Gaul. The Eagles keepers slid towards Nicol and deflected her shot wide.

BC was led offensively by DiMartino with eight shots, while Mewis and Wagner had three shots apiece. Gaul had four saves in the match.

 

BC had 22 shots in the match, while UCF had 13. The Eagles also had an edge in corner kicks, 9-3.

 

GAME NOTES:

 

• Freshman Lauren Bernard started her seventh career game. She has played every minute of every game this season.
• Kristen Mewis now leads BC with 13 points (four goals, five assists). She has scored a goal or assists in every game this season. Mewis had a goal and assist for the second time this season.
• Kate McCarthy’s game-tying goal gives her three for the season. That is her career-high for goals scored in a single season.
• BC will start ACC play on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. when Clemson visits Newton. BC leads the series, 6-1-1. Last season, the Eagles defeated Clemson, 4-0, on the road.
