No. 6 Warhawks Advance to WIAC Championship
For the seventh season in a row, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team has advanced to the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament championship game. The top-seeded Warhawks knocked off the fifth-seeded Titans of UW-Oshkosh 3-1 Thursday at Fiskum Field in Whitewater.
UW-W, winners of a school record 18 games in a row, improves to 19-1 this season while UW-O concludes their season with a record of 10-9-1.
Also of note in Thursday night's game, Brianna Reid (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) became the school's all-time leading point scorer when she scored the second goal of the match, unassisted in the twelfth minute. Reid's point total has climbed to 135 (59 goals, 17 assists) breaking the previous record of 133 held by Emily Gerber (2008-11).
The Warhawks' Adria Schueler (Wales, Wis./Mukwonago) scored her first collegiate goal in the fourth minute of play on a pass from Payton DeLuga (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown).
When asked about Schueler's early goal, Head Coach Ryan Quamme noted, "Adria has been so close so many times, and we've been asking her to get forward. We were extremely excited to see her get that goal; she's earned it."
Reid's record breaking goal followed eight minutes later and Morgan Beaty (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) added a tally in the 36th minute on a cross from Emily Mouille (Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) to give the Warhawks a 3-0 lead the half.
The Titans continued to battle and finally broke onto the scoreboard in the 56th minute when senior midfielder Robyn Elliott launched a bomb from 25 yards out that snuck in just over the head of Warhawk goalkeeper Jennie Novak (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Academy).
The Warhawks had several other opportunities to extend their lead in the second half, but UW-O goalkeeper Madelyn Runyan made a pair of saves to limit the damage.
"I thought our team did a great job setting the tone in the first thirty minutes. I think at half we dealt with a team trying to extend their season which is great experience for us", Quamme stated after the match.
UW-W outshot the visitors 18-9 and both teams tallied six saves.
Novak, a freshman, earned her third win of the season filling in for Sara Klimisch (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail High School and Academy). Quamme cited Novak's play after the match stating, "Jennie's done great for us. She's come off the bench in some difficult situations earlier this year. She's done extremely well considering she doesn't have a lot of minutes under her belt."
The Warhawks will host UW-La Crosse on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Fiskum Field with the WIAC Tournament crown on the line. UW-L has only one tournament title to their credit and that came back in 1996. UW-W has won three of the last four tournament titles. The winner earns the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
