No. 7 Billikens Roll Past Cincinnati, 4-0
ST. LOUIS – Four different Billikens scored as the No. 7 Saint Louis men’s soccer team coasted to a 4-0 win over Cincinnati Friday in the Bearcat Soccer Classic at Gettler Field.
Billiken sophomore midfielder David Graydon tallied a goal and added an assist, while SLU keeper Nick Shackelford recorded one save for the shutout. The Billikens are 2-0 on the season for the first time since 2004.
“It was a great win tonight, everyone had the right attitude,” SLU head coach Mike McGinty said. “It was a big key for us to score early after allowing the first goal in the last match. We were able to score three in the first half and managed the match well from there. Everybody contributed and had a piece of the play, it was a really good performance.”
Sophomore defender Julian Gieseke opened the scoring in the 18th minute when he headed home his first-career goal from a Graydon corner kick. Several minutes later, Graydon scored a goal of his own when he put home a free kick. It was Graydon’s third career tally.
Just before halftime, senior forward Adnan Gabeljic scored the 12th goal of his career. He won the ball at midfield, raced past several Bearcat defenders and put one past Cincy keeper Taylor Hafling for the unassisted marker.
Sophomore midfielder Francisco Vizcaino scored his team-leading second goal of the season in the 75th minute, heading home a rebound for the 4-0 final.
The Billikens outshot the Bearcats (0-3) 17-8 and held an 11-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Several Billikens saw their first collegiate action late in the match. Filip Pavisic, Joe Saad, Dirk van der Velde and Luis Manta all recorded minutes.
The Billikens resume play in the Bearcat Soccer Classic Sunday when they face Northern Illinois (1-2) at 11 a.m. On Friday evening, NIU dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to Evansville.
