No. 8 UCSD Women Tie at Cal State San Marcos
SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The No. 8 University of California San Diego women's soccer team couldn't come up with the goal it needed in settling for a scoreless draw against Cal State San Marcos in a non-conference matchup between California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and city rivals at The Cage on Saturday.
With the result, UCSD moved to 12-2-1 overall. CSUSM is 7-6-1. The Tritons had taken this season's regular-season meeting in La Jolla on Oct. 4 through a fourth-minute Katie O'Laughlin header. The tie snapped their win streak at nine. UCSD had entered the contest with victories in 29 consecutive games against CCAA opposition in all competitions, to include non-conference dates like Saturday's tilt, as well as CCAA Tournament matches. The Tritons are still an undefeated 29-0-1 in their last 30 against league foes, and their 23-game in-conference win streak remains intact.
UCSD had not produced a tie since a 1-1 deadlock at home against Cal State Monterey Bay on Oct. 9, 2015. It was a second overtime game in a row for the Tritons, who found a double-overtime winner with 3:40 to go from junior forward Mary Reilly at Humboldt State last Friday, Oct. 13. It was not to be duplicated this afternoon, however, as UCSD outshot CSUSM 16-6, but couldn't register a goal.
The Tritons also earned 13 corner kicks, to just three by the home side. The Cougars certainly played a physical game, being called for 20 fouls to only three by UCSD.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Angelica Ramos made three saves in goal for UCSD to earn her 10th individual shutout of 2017. Freshman Yesenia Betancourt (Carlsbad/Carlsbad HS), playing during a second red-card suspension absence of sophomore starter Bailey Cockrill, collected four stops for the Cougars.
UCSD's best chance to score over the first 45 minutes came late in that half, as Reilly (Chula Vista/Hilltop HS) accepted a short pass from freshman teammate Maddy Samilo (San Diego/Rancho Bernardo HS) on the right diagonal, cut it from her right foot to her left, and saw her shot bang off the crossbar.
In the first overtime, a Triton got her head to a left-sided corner kick in the center of the penalty area, though it was hard to determine exactly who it was, but Betancourt came up huge and somehow kept the ball out of the net. Another scrum situation midway through the second and final 10-minute overtime put the ball near Natalie Saddic's (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) foot, but the redshirt sophomore holding central midfielder spun toward goal and just couldn't get a shot off.
UC San Diego is up in the Bay Area in the coming week to conclude its regular season at Cal State East Bay on Thursday, Oct. 26, and Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday, Oct. 28. The Tritons have unofficially clinched a second consecutive CCAA regular-season championship.
