Noles Roll Past Colorado
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Nine and counting! Top-seeded Florida State (21-1-3) is headed back to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship for the ninth year in a row, extending the nation’s longest active streak, with a 4-0 victory over Colorado (14-7-2) Saturday afternoon inside the Seminole Soccer Complex.
Dagny Brynjarsdottir scored a pair of goals for the second straight match and Michaela Hahn tied a career-high with three points on a goal and an assist as the Seminoles set a school record with their 21st victory of the season following Saturday’s win over Colorado.
Florida State scored early and often on Saturday as all three first half goals came within the first 15 minutes of play including two off the head of Brynjarsdottir in the first seven minutes. The two-goal effort for the junior midfielder was her fourth multi-goal game of the season pushing her team leading goal total to 14 on the year. The Icelandic native now has five goals in the last four contests to pace the Seminoles.
While Florida State’s offensive attack was clicking on all cylinders in the third round, so was its defense as the Seminoles held the Buffaloes to just four shots including just one shot on goal which came in the 38th minute. The shutout was FSU’s 14th of the season and second in the NCAA Tournament. Through the first three postseason games, the Seminoles have outscored the opposition 12-1.
Florida State wasted little time cracking the scoreboard on Saturday when Brynjarsdottir scored the fastest goal of the season just a minute and 19 seconds into the start of the match to give the Seminoles an early 1-0 lead. Hahn sent a beautiful cross from the left side of the 18-yard box to the far post where Brynjarsdottir headed the ball in for her first goal of the afternoon.
The Seminoles quickly added to their lead in the seventh minute on Brynjarsdottir’s second goal of the game. This time Brynjarsdottir’s header caromed off the left post then off the leg of Colorado keeper Annie Brunner and into the net for the goal. Jamia Fields and Isabella Schmid were credited with assists on the play.
FSU pushed its lead to 3-0 after just 15 minutes thanks to another header but this time from Kristin Grubka. The goal came off a free kick delivery from Megan Campbell just beyond midfield. Grubka out jumped the competition on the play flicking the ball inside the left post from about 16 yards out for her third goal of the season.
The final tally of the afternoon came in the 70th minute when Brunner could not cradle a long blast off the foot of Hahn which trickled into the back of the net for her second goal of the season. Kassey Kallman was credited with an assist on the play, her first of the season.
With the win, Florida State extended the nation’s longest current home unbeaten streak to 34-games (33-0-1) as the Seminoles improved to 15-0-1 inside the friendly confines of the Seminole Soccer Complex in 2013.
