North Texas Take No. 10 Wake Forest To 2OT
Winston-Salem, N.C. – The North Texas soccer team took No. 10 Wake Forest to the brink in double-overtime, but a 25-yard free kick goal from Katie Stengel in the 105th minute spoiled the Mean Green upset bid.
North Texas (2-1) entered the game 3-14-0 against ranked opponents all-time, but came dangerously close to its first ranked victory since 2003.
"Obviously it stings a bit losing on a late goal in double overtime against the No. 10 team in the country," said North Texas head coach John Hedlund. "But the bottom line is we showed how good we are tonight, and why we should be ranked in the top 25 nationally."
The Mean Green went into the halftime break down 1-0, but needed only seconds to even the score. Lindsey Hulstein fed a perfect pass down the middle of the box to a wide open Karla Pineda, who buried it into the right side of the net from 12 yards out in the 46th minute.
North Texas controlled the overtime period until Stengel, the leading scorer in Wake Forest history, sealed the win for the Deacons.
North Texas will return to action in Winston-Salem on Sunday against Virginia Tech at 10:30 a.m. Central.
