Northeastern 1, Ohio State 4
BOSTON – The Northeastern women’s soccer team grabbed an early 1-0 lead against No. 21 Ohio State, but the Buckeyes netted three goals in the second half to secure a 4-1 win Sunday afternoon.
The afternoon got off to an emotional start at Northeastern retired the late Jackie Spellman’s No. 14 before the game. Spellman played for NU from 2002 to 2005. She passed away in April 2009 after a long battle with leukemia.
Hanna Terry scored her first goal of the season 7:33 into the game when she received a long pass up the middle from Hannah O’Donnell. O’Donnell’s service from NU’s half of the field hit Terry in stride, who buried the breakaway opportunity into the back of the net.
Ohio State tied the game at 12:34 when Lindsay Agnew scored off a short cross from the right side from Nichelle Prince.
Morgan Hilby nearly gave the Huskies a 2-1 lead when she flicked a header on net at 21:15, but Ohio State starting goaltender Rachel Middleman made the stop to keep the score even going into halftime.
The Huskies and Buckeyes kept pace with each other throughout the first half. Both teams put a pair of shots on goal, but NU held the edge in attempted shots, 7-5.
Nichelle Prince scored all three goals in the second half for the Buckeyes. She also assisted on Ohio State’s first-half goal.
Terry made a bid for her second goal in the final minutes of the game with a quick breakaway on the right side, but the Buckeye’s Jillian McVicker, who took over in net after halftime, made a great diving save to her right.
Terry led NU in shots with four, followed by O’Donnell with three. The Huskies were outshot by Ohio State, 14-10.
Northeastern next travels to Providence, R.I., for a 7 p.m. kick off against Brown on Thursday, Sept. 12.
