Northeastern Women's Soccer vs. CofC
BOSTON – Morgan Hilby and Hanna Terry each scored their second goals of the season, and Mackenzie Dowd's first goal of the season stood as the game-winner as the Northeastern women's soccer team opened its Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) schedule with a 3-0 win at College of Charleston Friday night.
Terry, the team captain, proved to be the Huskies' (1-6-3, 1-0-0 CAA) offensive catalyst by adding a pair of assists to go along with her goal in the winning effort.
The Cougars (2-8-0, 0-1-0 CAA), who are in their first year in the CAA, suffered their fifth consecutive loss.
NU opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Terry's corner kick from the right side was long and nearly went out of bounds for a goal kick, but Carina Deandreis made great hustle play to keep the ball in bounds and found Dowd open in front of the net. Dowd drilled the offering over CofC goalkeeper Taylor Avery, giving NU the 1-0 lead.
Terry nearly put NU up 2-0 when she showed off some fancy dribbling skills and broke free from a defender in the 31st minute, but her shot from 14 yards out was stopped by Avery.
The Huskies again made a bid for a 2-0 first-half lead when Terry found a streaking Emily Nasuti on the left side, but Nasuti's shot was saved by Avery.
Northeastern carried the 1-0 lead into the break.
The Huskies continued the offensive onslaught early in the second half when Hilby had a look from seven yards out, but her chip shot went over the net.
Paige Burnett made a magnificent diving save to preserve the 1-0 lead in the 54th minute when McCaille Jones drilled a shot heading towards the upper left corner from 19 yards out.
Hilby gave the Huskies an insurance goal to go ahead 2-0 in the 65th minute when Terry launched a beautiful cross from the right side that went over the CofC goalkeeper and found Hilby on the far post. Hilby headed her second goal of the season into the back of the net.
Terry tallied her second goal of the season and gave NU a 3-0 in the 72nd minute when Hannah O'Donnell hit Jenny Sinclair with a long pass down the left side, and Sinclair found Terry in front of the net for a tap-in score.
The Huskies came away with a strong 17-6 advantage in shots. Although the Cougars made an offensive push early in the second half, Burnett needed just two saves to preserve the shutout, her first of the season.
The Huskies continue conference play when they host UNCW Sunday, Sept. 29, at 12 p.m.
