Northeastern Women's Soccer vs. Hofstra
BOSTON – Shayna Blackwood and Maria Lanyi each scored a goal and Morgan Hilby tallied two assists as the Northeastern women's soccer team beat Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rival Hofstra, 2-0, Saturday night at Parsons Field.
NU (3-6-3, 3-0-0 CAA) goalkeeper Paige Burnett needed six saves for her second shutout of the season. She has allowed just one goal during the Huskies' current three-game winning streak.
The Pride (8-4-0, 2-1-0 CAA), which was favored by CAA coaches to win the conference in a preseason poll, suffered its first conference loss of the season.
Northeastern grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first half when a Hofstra foul allowed for Oksana Nicholls to take a free kick from just beyond midfield, and she found Hilby in the box. Hilby made a quick touch pass to Blackwood, who buried her second goal of the season into the back of the net.
Maria Lanyi provided an insurance goal in the 74th minute when Hilby carried the ball down the left side of the field and sent a crossing pass in front of the net. Lanyi got her head on the ball and put it over Hofstra goalkeeper Emily Morphitis' head for her first goal of the season.
Shortly after NU went up 2-0, Hofstra made a bid to get on the board, but Burnett made a great diving save to her left, preserving the shutout.
Burnett's diving save led to a Husky counterattack, where Hilby got a shot off from the top of the 18-yard box that just barely went over the cross bar.
Hanna Terry nearly put Northeastern ahead, 3-0, when she took a free kick from 20 yards out, but Morphitis tipped the scoring chance over the net.
The Huskies begin a three-game road set when they travel to Drexel on Friday, Oct. 11, for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
