NU Knocks Off Gophers, 2-0
Northwestern vs. Minnesota Video Highlights
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern freshman Addie Steiner recorded her first career goal and Kate Allen added two assists as the Wildcats knocked of the Minnesota Golden Gophers 2-0 Saturday at Lakeside Field.
NU (3-9-1, 1-5-0 B1G) earned its first conference win of the season against a Minnesota team that was receiving votes in the latest NSCAA poll after upsetting ranked foes Michigan and Penn State. The ‘Cats put the pressure on Minnesota throughout the game, outshooting the Gophers 19-6 and 9-5 on with shots on goal.
In the game’s 41st minute, Allen forced a through ball past the Minnesota (9-4-1, 2-3-1) defense and found Katie Landgrebe just three feet left of the goal. Landgrebe hit a wide shot past Gophers goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
The ‘Cats tried to add to their lead while turning down shot attempts by Minnesota. In the game’s 80th minute Allen headed the ball to the freshman Steiner about 30 yards away from the net. Steiner controlled the ball and fired a shot into the net for her first NCAA goal.
Goalkeeper Jenna Hascher earned the shutout victory for Northwestern, making five saves against the Gophers.
On Thursday, the ‘Cats host Illinois at Lakeside Field at 6:30 p.m. CT.
