October 8, 2012
The University of Delaware allowed two first half goals 12 minutes apart and the lead held up the rest of the way as Northeastern University handed the Blue Hens a 2-0 setback in Colonial Athletic Association women’s soccer action Sunday at the Delaware Mini-Stadium. Huskies forward Shayna Blackwood scored her first goal of the season in the 25th minute when took a rebound off a UD defender and knocked the ball just inside the left post that gave NU an early 1-0 lead Northeastern’s Sandra Magnusdottir recorded her second goal of the year in the 37th minute when her arching kick from the right side of the field slipped into the top left corner of UD’s goal from 30 yards away as the Huskies handed Delaware its second straight setback. “Give credit to Northeastern, they worked hard,” Delaware head coach Scott Grzenda said. “They clogged up the back against us, and it took until the second half for us to make the adjustments.” Northeastern improved to 5-8 (3-2 CAA) with its second win in the last three outings while the Blue Hens (7-6, 4-2 CAA) lost their second-straight game following a five-game win streak. “The key is to keep working hard,” Grzenda added. “That will give us opportunities to produce points in the conference standings.” The Huskies outshot the Blue Hens by a 14-7 margin and held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. Delaware goalkeeper Jess Levy posted three saves while Northeastern keeper Paige Burnett posted the shutout with four saves. The Hens will return to action Oct. 12 when they host defending CAA champion William & Mary at 7 p.m. at Delaware Mini-Stadium.
