NYU Men's Soccer Picks Up 6-1 Win
Led by a hat trick from Kyle Green and Adam Fein’s school-record-tying three assists, the New York University men’s soccer team rolled to a 6-1 victory at the College of Staten Island on Saturday, October 22, in its final non-conference game of 2011.
The Violets (7-6-1) got back over the .500 mark with a well-rounded performance. The six goals tied for NYU’s most in a game this season, as the squad outshot the Dolphins (3-10-1) 25-4 and held an 8-0 advantage in corners.
In addition to Green’s and Fein’s big performances, Billy Cordova totaled two goals and an assist, and Mickey Ingerman netted his first career goal. Three other Violets – Matt Newman, Niki Chow and Ian Murray – tallied assists.
“We were able to play just about everybody and had a good day out,” said head coach Joe Behan. “It was good to get some goals going into the biggest weekend of the season, so overall I’m very happy with the performance.”
Green’s hat trick came just six days after he scored both of the Violets’ goals in a 2-1 double-overtime win over the University of Chicago, giving him five goals in two games. The junior leads NYU with nine goals this season, and his third and final goal gave him 50 points for his career.
Fein, meanwhile, tied a school record and approached another in the victory. He recorded three assists, tied for the most in a game in school history (the feat has been accomplished five other times since 1989, when records began to be kept).
In addition, Fein’s three helpers upped his career assist total to 15, just one behind the school record of 16 held by Branden Neal. His seven assists this season rank fourth all-time at NYU with three games to play.
Green and Fein connected for the games’ first goal just 6:25 in. Cordova then netted the next two just four minutes apart, in the 39th and 43rd minutes. The first came on a cross from Newman, while the second was headed in by Cordova after Chow played a ball into the box.
Cordova set up the next goal in the 73rd minute, feeding Ingerman for the freshman’s first career goal.
Staten Island got on the board for its lone goal just moments later, but Green added two more goals after that for the Violets, the first from Ian Murray and Fein and the second from just Fein.
NYU’s three goalkeepers – Forrest Sexton, Jonah Poster and Dan Marino – all saw time in goal, with Sexton making three saves. Ahmed El-Ghareib made nine stops for the Dolphins.
NYU returns to action next weekend with a huge University Athletic Association (UAA) road trip. The Violets (2-2 in the UAA) will travel to Carnegie Mellon University and Emory University, looking to stay alive in the chase for the UAA title.
