NYU Men's Soccer Wins 6-0
Led by a hat trick from Nimo Freitag Bergstroem, the New York University men’s soccer team rolled past visiting Baruch College 6-0 on Saturday, September 17, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
Freitag Bergstroem netted three of the Violets’ (2-3-1) first four goals in a game nearly identical to last year’s contest, also a 6-0 NYU victory. Paolo Luciano added two goals and an assist, while Billy Cordova scored the Violets’ final goal of the game.
“We had some good finishes today,” said NYU head coach Joe Behan. “We got off to a great start in the first 15-20 minutes, which is what we spoke about doing before the game, so I was pleased with that.
“Nimo played very well, and it was great to see Matt Newman playing more to his form,” he added.
Newman set up the first goal of the game just 12:14 in, playing a ball into the box that Luciano headed in. Just 54 seconds later, Freitag Bergstroem expanded the lead to 2-0, collecting a rebound after his initial shot was blocked and blasting his second effort into the back of the net.
Five minutes later, Freitag Bergstroem struck again, chasing down a through ball from Luciano and flicking it past the charging Baruch (3-4) goalkeeper.
The Violets entered halftime still up 3-0 and with an 11-3 edge in shots. The second half was more of the same, beginning with Freitag Bergstroem scoring his third straight goal in the 56th minute on a through ball from Adam Fein.
Luciano added another header goal in the 70th minute, this time on a ball from Juan Velez, and Cordova capped the scoring with 4:29 to play by chasing down a through ball from Ian Murray and knocking it in.
For the game, the Violets outshot the Bearcats 22-8 and held a 12-1 advantage in corners. Jonah Poster and Forrest Sexton split the time between the pipes, with Sexton making three saves in the second period.
Helder Correia and Peter DiBona combined for five saves in goal for Baruch.
NYU returns to action on Wednesday for a big road game at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, a squad that reached the “Elite Eight” of the NCAA Division III Championship last season. Game time is scheduled for 7:45 pm in Kings Point, NY.
