ODU Beats No. 3 Georgetown 1-0
NORFOLK, VA—ODU junior forward Ivan Militar (Hungary) scored in the first six-plus minutes of the match to help the Monarchs to a 1-0 exhibition win over preseason third ranked Georgetown Sunday night at the ODU Soccer Complex.
Militar got the throw-in pass from senior Ryan Oakes (Virginia Beach, VA.) just in front of the box. He then turned and fired it in for the goal.
"Ivan's goal was a good way to start the game. The defense was terrific. Our back four, plus our midfield were outstanding. Georgetown had a lot of possessions of the ball but didn't create a lot of chances," said ODU head coach Alan Dawson. "At halftime, we felt like we needed to be a little better on the ball. We asked our guys to be more courageous in the second half and look for the ball, and keep the ball. I thought we did that in the second half and that’s why we won the game."
Both teams attempted nine shots each and four each were shots on goal. The Hoyas, last year’s NCAA runners-up had five corner kicks to the Monarchs one.
ODU senior keeper Sean Stowe (Midlothian, VA) and freshman Matthew Sanchez (Owings Mills, MD.) combined for the shutout. Stowe had three saves and Sanchez one.
The Monarchs return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they host Coastal Carolina at 4 p.m. in an exhibition match.
