ODU Defeats Mason 3-2 On Fox Soccer
ODU SOCCER MONARCHS DEFEAT GEORGE MASON, 3-2 ON NATIONAL TV
NORFOLK, VA--- Alex DeJohn, Yannick Smith and Jordan LeBlanc each scored goals to lead the nationally ranked Monarchs (7-1/1-1) to a 3-2 victory over George Mason (7-2/1-1) in front of the largest home crowd of the season of 1,577 nationally televised on Fox Soccer Channel.
The Monarchs ranked ninth by College Soccer News, 12th by Soccer American, 14th by the NSCAA/Coaches and 16th by Soccer Times.
In a match that featured five of the CAA’s top scorers, ODU took the early lead at the 13:45 mark of the first half when junior Jason Gaylord’s (Kendall, NY.) cross was headed into the net by senior Alex DeJohn (Marlboro, NJ.).
In the second half, Monarch freshman Ryan Condotta (Keller, TX.) started a break-a-way and fed All-American Yannick Smith (Hillsborough, NJ.) who punched it in for a 2-0 lead 11 minutes into the half.
The Patriots came back four minutes later when Julio Arjona’s hit Timmy Mulgrew for a header to cut ODU’s lead to 2-1.
Six minutes later after junior Gideon Asante (Sunyani, Ghana) was fouled in the box, and senior Jordan LeBlanc (Haverford, PA.) scored on a penalty kick for a 3-1 Monarch lead.
Mason then scored with two seconds left in the match as Mulgrew scored on an assist from Brice Colcombe for the final 3-2 score.
ODU and Mason were even at 10 shots each and five shots on goal each as senior goalkeeper Victor Francoz (Fleurieu Sur Saone, France) had three aves for ODU and Dustin Butcher had two saves for the Patriots.
ODU returns to action Wednesday night when they host James Madison at 7 p.m.
