ODU Drops Heartbreaker to Davenport in Overtime

September 10, 2011
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio Dominican''s men''s soccer team rallied from a 1-0 deficit late in the second half to force overtime against visiting Davenport (Mich.) on Friday evening, but a DU golden goal two and half minutes into the extra session sealed the 2-1 setback for the Panthers. After a scoreless first half that saw Davenport (1-3-0) finish with a 6-3 shots advantage, including 4-0 shots on goal advantage, DU broke through just 1:32 into the second as a unlucky foul in the box allowed Jai Maw to connect on the ensuing penalty kick for the 1-0 lead. Despite trailing, ODU''s offense picked up steam in the latter stages of the half. Junior Tyler Huerkamp (Loveland, OH) almost tied the score in the 67th minute as his shot deflected off one defender before being headed out by another just before the goal line. With under five minutes remaining in regulation, the Panthers determined to not go down without a fight, finally ended the scoring drought as junior Colby Catlett (Hilliard, OH) headed in his first goal of the season off a Justin Wheeler (Jr./Gahanna, OH) corner. Two saves my sophomore keeper Dean Dziewit (Waterford, MI) in the closing minutes sent the game to overtime. However, just 2:31 into the overtime, Davenport scored the golden goal off a set piece of their own as Carl Winterbottom''s header off a Ryan Duffy-McGirr corner ricocheted off an ODU defender, and pulling Dziewit off his line, found the far side of the net. Despite the loss, Dziewit turned away a season-best nine shots. The Panthers (1-1-0) have a quick turnaround as they welcome Saginaw Valley State (Mich.) to Panther Field at 4:30 p.m. this Sunday, Sept. 11 for both team''s conference opener.
