ODU Wins Stihl Classic Title With 3-2 Win
ODU SOCCER MONARCHS CAPTURE STIHL SOCCER CLASSIC TITLE
No. 6 Monarchs defeat Winthrop 3-2
NORFOLK, VA.—Tim Hopkinson, Chris Harmon and Gideon Asante each scored a goal to lift the ODU Soccer Monarchs (4-0)
To a 3-2 victory over Winthrop in the 37th annual Stihl Soccer Classic. The sixth ranked Monarchs win the tournament title based on
most goals scored in the tournament.
Hopkinson,a junior forward and tournament MVP put the Monarchs on the board first with a goal with a little more than 22 minutes left in the first half on A pass from Gideon Asante, but six minutes later Winthrop got the equalizer as Achille Obougo got a pass in the box from Tomas Brennan
and the two teams went into halftime tied at 1-1. Hopkinson finished the two-day tournament with four goals and four assists.
In the second half with 13:08 left Chris Harmon put the Monarchs up 2-1 with an assist from Tim Hopkinson with a quick pass in the middle.
ODU made it 3-1 on a goal by Gideon Asante with an assist from All-American Yannick Smith off a break-a-way.
Winthrop cut it to 3-2 on an un assisted goal by Mason Lavallet.
Joining Hopkinson on the All-Tournament team were teammates Jordan LeBlanc, Gideon Asante, and Chris Harmon. VCU had Jason
Johnson, Romena Bowie and Juan Arbalaez, while Patrick Barnes and Tomas Brennan of Winthrop and Eric lag and John Gurel of Seton
Hall round out the team.
ODU outshot the eagles, 24-4 overall and 12-2 on shots in goal as Winthrop goalkeeper Tom Banfield had nine saves on the day.
The Monarchs return to action next weekend in Omaha, NE. at the Creighton Soccer Classic. ODU will open with eighth ranked
Creighton who reached the NCAA Final Four last year on Friday, then play Drake next Sunday, before returning home on Sept.18
to take on second ranked Maryland.
In the earlier match, VCU defeated Seton Hall, 5-1 led by two goals by Jason Johnson.
