Offensive outburst leads to victory for Lady
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Led by freshman Ellen Lundy, the Lipscomb women’s soccer team set five school records in picking up its first win in the 2013 season with a 10-0 victory over Alabama A&M.
"It was a good game today and we are happy with the result," Lipscomb head coach Kevin O'Brien said. "The girls bounced back well from Friday's result and the disappointment associated with Kelsey and Niamh's injuries."
Lundy struck a chord Monday afternoon striking three goals for the first hat trick in the NCAA era for the Lady Bisons. Her seven points also set an individual record the Purple and Gold.
Junior Baylee Linnell got the school-record 10 goals kick-started in the third minute of action as she found the back of the net thanks to an assist from Lundy. Linnell again scored in the 12th minute, this time unassisted.
Sandwiched between the two goals from Linnel, freshman Jolene Muir found the back of the net in the 10th minute. With a goal from Megan Miller in the closing minutes of the first half, the Purple and Gold led 5-0 at intermission.
Junior Emily Shuler, sophomore Caroline Chadwell and freshman Alyssa Plowman each added a goal in the second half.
"We scored some really great goals that I'm hopeful we can replicate more throughout the season," O'Brien said. "We are encouaged by the contributions of our freshmen players. They seized their opportunity to impress the staff and have subsequently created more competition in the squad. That is a good thing."
Freshman goalkeeper Anna Buhigas earned her first career shutout in just her second game after making four saves for the Lady Bisons.
The offensive barrage set school records for points in a game (25) and shots on goal (18). The Lady Bisons attempted 30 shots, holding the Lady Bulldogs to just five.
Lipscomb improves to 1-1-0 overall. Alabama A&M falls to 0-3-0.
Lipscomb travels to Middle Tennessee State on Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The home debut of the Purple and Gold takes place against UT-Martin on Monday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m.
