Oglethorpe defeats Centre 1-0 in SCAC Men's Championship
One day after knocking off No. 4 Trinity University in overtime, the Centre College men's soccer team was unable to pull out one more win as the Colonels fell 1-0 to Oglethorpe University in the SCAC Men's Soccer Tournament Championship Sunday, Nov. 6 in Birmingham, Ala.
The Stormy Petrels' Sean King, off an assist from Jakub Madej, scored the lone goal of the match at the 18:17 mark in the opening period.
Both defenses held strong from there. Oglethorpe (17-3 overall), playing one less match on the weekend due to being the No. 2 seed, out-shot the fifth-seeded Colonels 16-5 on the day and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
"Three soccer games in three days is rough," Centre head coach Jeb Burch said.
"We didn't acknowledge fatigue as a group heading into the game today but once the whistle blew you could see we were tired. Yet somehow, we kept getting little chances, even after the red card. I think that reflects the quality of our bench."
Senior Chris Jackson (Oxford, Ohio) stopped five of the six shots he faced in goal for the Colonels.
"It was a great run and a good year for us and that is due in part to our seniors. It's too bad. I would have like to see how this team would do in the NCAA's. We just kept getting better every week and proved to be a difficult team in the SCAC Tournament," Burch finished.
With the loss to Oglethorpe, the Colonels finish the season 13-6-2 overall.
