Ohio Drops High-Scoring Affair at Indiana
August 19, 2012

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – In just the second all-time meeting between the schools, Ohio Soccer lost at Indiana on Sunday afternoon. Facing an early deficit, the Bobcats battled back to take a 2-1 lead before the Hoosiers scored three unanswered goals to earn the 4-2 victory.

Indiana outshot the Bobcats by a 20-9 margin, with ten of their shots being on goal. Ohio had a strong first half, registering the same number of shots as the team did throughout the entirety of the Wright State match on Friday. Maggie Murnane and Cathryn Rogers found the back of the net for the Bobcats, with junior Natalie Bechtel providing an assist on Murnane’s tally.

The Hoosiers relied on a balanced scoring attack, as four different student-athletes scored goals in the match, many of which from impressive individual plays. Jordan Woolums had a strong game for the hosts, scoring Indiana’s third goal and assisting on the team’s fourth.

The teams traded early shots on target in the first 15 minutes, with Mattie Liston (Lakewood, Ohio) making a save on a Rebecca Candler attempt in the second minute and Rogers (Etobicoke, Ontario) hitting one on frame in the 12th minute.

Indiana found the back of the net just before the match was 20 minutes old, taking a 1-0 lead when Lisa Nouanesengsy found the back of the net in the 18th minute. The goal was Nouanesengsy’s fourth of the season, as she had previously scored a hat trick in Indiana’s season-opening 3-0 win over Arkansas State on Friday evening.

Ohio (0-2) responded immediately and emphatically, scoring to pull level in the 25th minute. Junior transfer Murnane (Libertyville, Ill.) headed a nice cross from Bechtel (Westlake, Ohio) into the back of the net merely seven minutes after the Hoosiers opened the scoring. Rogers scored Ohio’s second goal of the match, netting her first tally of the season from the penalty spot in the 28th minute. The converted penalty was the seventh goal of the senior’s career and makes her a perfect 2-for-2 from the spot as a Bobcat.

Not discouraged by losing the early lead, Indiana (2-0) pulled level when Colombian international Orianica Velasquez scored her first goal of the season in the 29th minute. Following an Ohio foul, Velasquez scored directly from a free kick 25 yards from goal. The Hoosiers then reclaimed the lead in the 44th minute when Wollums dribbled past a few Ohio defenders and beat Liston to make it 3-2.

Following a significant scoreless stretch in the second half, Indiana was able to add to its advantage in the 73rd minute. Rebecca Dreher scored her first goal of the season, heading a cross from Woolums into the back of the net to make it 4-2 in favor of the hosts.

Liz Finley (Mason, Ohio) registered a shot for the Green and White in the second frame, but her attempt went high of the target.

The Bobcats will next be in action on Friday, Aug. 24 when they play at DePaul. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
