Old Dominion Ties Penn In Thriller, 2-2
NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University women’s soccer team tied Penn 2-2 on Sunday afternoon at the ODU Soccer Complex. The two ODU goals on Sunday were the first two that Penn has impressively given up throughout this 2013 regular season.
A series of goals started in the 36th minute, when Old Dominion freshman Jackie Stroud played a set piece ball in the air into Penn’s box, only to find teammate Taylor Smith who headed the ball over the extended arms of Penn’s keeper, Kalijah Terilli. Smith’s score was the first goal that the Quakers have given up all season.
Two minutes later, it was the Lady Monarchs who struck again. This time it was Jessie Klamut who created her own opportunity for herself by dribbling through a few Quakers and striking the ball into the right side of Penn’s net, giving ODU a 2-0 advantage.
It did not take Penn long to respond to Old Dominion’s furious attack. In the 42nd minute of play, Haley Cooper and Megan York hooked up for a combo-pass, which led to a Penn goal by Lindsey Sawczuk. At halftime, Old Dominion led the Quakers 2-1.
15 minutes into the second half, Penn’s Kerry Scalora bent her corner kick directly into Old Dominion’s net, tying the ballgame at 2-2.
Despite a couple opportunities towards the end of regulation and throughout the two extra periods, neither team was able to beat the other’s defense for the game winner. Penn is now 4-0-2 on the season; while the Lady Monarchs move to 0-6-1.
Penn outshot ODU 17-7, as well as took one more corner than Old Dominion (5-4). Lenox ended up with four big saves for the Lady Monarchs; Terilli tallied just two saves for Penn.
The Old Dominion University women’s soccer team will return to the pitch on Friday September 27 against Marshall in Huntington, W. Va. at 7:30 p.m.
