BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana once again relied on its defense on Friday night at Bill Armstrong Stadium, as the Hoosiers defeated Eastern Michigan, 1-0, for their fourth shutout through the first five games of the season.

 

The Hoosiers (4-0-1) continued their recent trend of consistent pressure on the opponent goal, outshooting the Eagles by a 25-11 margin. IU also registered seven corner kicks to five for EMU.

 

After outshooting Loyola-Chicago last Sunday, 20-8, and coming away with a 0-0 draw, tonight’s game showed some similarities through the first half with Indiana holding a 14-5 edge over the first 45 minutes.

 

But Indiana came out noticeably motivated to start the second half and were able to pounce on EMU. After drawing a corner deep in the Eastern Michigan end of the field, sophomore Kayleigh Steigerwalt stepped up to take the corner kick and sent a curling ball into the box that found the head of sophomore Jessie Bujouves and then the back of the goal. For Bujouves, it was her first goal of the season and the second of her career. The assist for Steigerwalt was her second of the season.

 

Indiana has now had nine different players account for the 10 goals the team has scored so far this season.

 

The Eagles tried to mount a comeback shortly after the IU goal, but IU senior goalkeeper Shannon Flower was up to the task yet again. Her biggest save came with less than 20 minutes left on a ball that seemed destined for the upper 90 but she was able to reach up and punch it over the crossbar, keeping the shutout in tact.

 

For Flower, she now has six career shutouts, just one behind a trio of players for sixth place on the all-time list at IU.

 

Additionally, IU has allowed just one goal through the first five games, something that hasn’t been done since 2000 at Indiana.

 

Prior to the start of the game, the team announced that the student section at IU Women’s Soccer games will be known as the “Screamin’ Crimson”, and t-shirts were handed out to the first 150 fans in attendance on Friday. The team held a contest over the summer, where fans could submit their suggestions for the student section name. The winning name was submitted by Justin Wright.

 

The Hoosiers will return to Bill Armstrong Stadium on Sunday to take on Eastern Kentucky at 2 p.m. ET. Fans are encouraged to bring their dogs with them to the game for the annual “Bark in the Park” promotion.
