Orange Dealt 1-0 Loss In Season Opener at Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. - The Syracuse men’s soccer team (0-1) held its own against defending Patriot League regular-season champion Colgate in a 1-0 loss on Saturday, Aug. 27 at Van Doren Field. The match was the season-opener for both teams.
Colgate freshman Jimmy McLaughlin notched the only goal of the match, scoring in the 53rd minute to provide the winning margin.
The teams were scoreless through the first 45 minutes, however SU junior Mark Brode had early chance on a free kick. The attempt, reminiscent of the game-winning goal he tallied last season against the Raiders, sailed high and the score remained 0-0.
Colgate (1-0) came out firing in the second half, and In the 53rd minute, senior Phil Boerger mishandled a save. McLaughlin was there to collect the rebound and tallied what proved to be the game-winner.
Syracuse had its best to chance to equalize in the 79th minute when senior Dan Summers pushed a shot just wide of the goal. In the final seconds, Boerger sent a ball into the Colgate box, but his teammates couldn''t win it as Colgate headed the ball out of bounds with no time remaining.
The Orange generated only three shots in the contest, but the play of Boerger kept Syracuse in it. He made six saves, including two in the first half, to keep the game scoreless.
Eight players made their first career starts for Syracuse, five of whom were freshmen. Rookie Jide Oluyedun also made his Orange debut, coming on as a sub in the first half.
“A lot of 18-year-olds made their debuts tonight,” said head coach Ian McIntyre. “The future is bright for the program and I’m excited to see how this team grows this campaign.”
McLaughlin and Shane Conlin paced the Raiders with four shots each. Goalkeeper Grant Reed played all 90 minutes to earn the shutout. He was not forced to make a save.
Syracuse returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 1 when it hosts Canisius in its home opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium.
Match Notes: Boerger, Grant Chong, Ted Cribley, Chris Makowski, Jordan Murrell, Summers, Skylar Thomas and Nick Perea all started their first game for Syracuse … Brode started in the last three season openers for the Orange and all 36 of the team''s matches since he joined the team in 2009.
