Orange Notches First ACC Win at Miami
MIAMI – Sophomore Stephanie Skilton (Auckland, New Zealand) scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 60th minute to give the Syracuse women’s soccer team a 1-0 victory at Miami on Thursday, Sept. 25. The win evens the Orange’s ACC record at 1-1 and improves its overall record to 4-4-3.
Skilton now has 16 career goals and climbs into a three-way tie for sixth place on Syracuse’s all-time leader list with Jaime Mingoia (1996-99) and Trisha Burch (1997-00). In addition, Skilton’s seven goals are the fifth-highest total for an Orange sophomore.
Syracuse withstood a fast start by Miami (2-8-0, 0-2) as it recorded two shots and earned a corner kick in the first seven minutes of play. The Hurricanes finished the half with nine shots, only two of which were on goal. The Orange earned two corner kicks in the first 45 minutes and posted four shots, two of which were on goal.
Skilton tallied the only goal of the game in the 60th minute when the ball deflected off a Hurricane and she took possession and placed her shot into the far corner of the net. Junior Maya Pitts (Montclair, N.J.) was awarded an assist on the play. The Orange defense made sure Skilton’s goal was enough as freshman Courtney Brosnan (Short Hills, N.J.) made three saves and SU successfully defended against two corner kicks in the next 17 minutes of action. Miami had one last chance to tie the game, but Gianna Dal Pozzo’s header went over the crossbar as the Orange recorded its third shutout of the season.
Syracuse improved on its shooting accuracy as four of its seven shots were on goal forcing Miami goalkeeper Emily Lillard to make three saves. The Hurricanes recorded 16 shots, but only five on goal as Brosnan recorded five saves and posted her first career shutout.
After playing seven consecutive road matches, Syracuse returns to the SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 28 to host Pittsburgh at noon. Admission is free of charge.
