Orange Ties Demon Deacons
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Freshman goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan (Short Hills, N.J.) recorded eight saves in the Syracuse women’s soccer team’s 0-0 tie in double overtime at Wake Forest on Sunday, Oct. 26.
“In the first half we came out a little flat against a very fast, physical and dynamic team,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “Wake Forest has been to the NCAA Tournament for the past 18 years and there is a reason why. We knew they were dangerous on attack and on set pieces. We asked the team to try not to give those opportunities, but we gave up a few too many. We fixed some things at halftime and made some adjustments and settled down and played. It was fun to see and we played some exciting soccer at times.”
Wake Forest (5-8-3, 3-4-2) was the more dangerous team in the first half, recording 10 shots and four corner kicks. Brosnan stopped the four shots that were on goal to keep the match tied heading into halftime.
Syracuse’s (5-9-4, 2-6-1) offense came alive in the second half. The Orange was able to get behind the Demon Deacons’ back four on several occasions and forced Wake Forest goalkeeper Lindsay Preston make big saves. Syracuse continued to push forward in the overtime sessions and created more opportunities. The Orange recorded the only shots in the extra sessions, but couldn’t find the back of the net as the game ended in a 0-0 tie.
“We’ve had our ups and downs this season but we continue to improve,” Wheddon said. “The players continue to work hard and continue to come together as a team. Today was a prime example of the team’s character. To come in and get a point in the ACC standings in this environment – I’m very proud of this team.”
The Orange will close out the regular season on Sunday, Nov. 2 when it hosts No. 5/5 North Carolina at the SU Soccer Stadium. Admission is free of charge.
