Oregon State Cruises Past [17/-] Pacific
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State University men’s soccer team rebounded from a three-game losing streak with a rejuvenated performance against [17/-] Pacific on Friday night at Paul Lorenz field.
The Beavers (3-5) got a goal each from senior Jordan Jones (Pacific Grove, Calif.) and junior Nathan Braaten (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) to spearhead a 2-0 win over the Tigers (7-2).
“For me, it’s always been in them to do well,” said head coach Steve Simmons. “I think, when you get frustrated with losses, there’s a tendency for athletes to overthink, and tonight they came out, competed and worked hard against a very good team.
“They wanted to get back on track and hit the reset button and I think they did a great job.”
Jones opened up the scoring in the contest in the 29th minute with the 25th goal of his career to give OSU a 1-0 lead. Jones stole the ball on the attacking third off a Tiger miscue and buried the shot past Curtis Goldsmith from 15 yards out into the lower right slot.
Freshman Gage Rogers (Gilbert, Ariz.) took advantage of his first career start by making two saves on the front end of the contest to keep the Beavers up 1-0 going into the intermission. Rogers needed only one save in the second half to preserve his first clean sheet and first win.
Braaten doubled the hosts’ lead in the 77th minute with his second career score after taking a feed from freshman Joe Hafferty (Renton, Wash.) on the left wing and placing the shot into the far corner for a 2-0 Oregon State advantage.
Pacific put numbers forward to close out the contest, but the OSU defense held firm for the win.
“It’s hard when you should be getting results and they don’t come your way,” added Simmons. “So, for these guys, it’s incredible that they did this and I’m proud of them.”
Oregon State officially closes the non-conference portion of the schedule and opens up Pac-12 play on October 1 at Washington. The Beavers will head out on the road with kickoff set for 3 p.m. and will broadcast live on the Pac-12 Networks.
