OT Goal Sinks Warhawk Men on the Road
After taking a 2-0 lead, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team gave up three unanswered goals to lose to Saint John's University in overtime Friday evening in Collegeville, Minnesota. The Warhawks fall to 1-2 with the loss while the Johnnies improve to 2-0-1.
The Warhawks put early pressure on the Johnnies firing three shots in the first 14 minutes, scoring on the third.
Andres Villarreal (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) played a ball over the top of the SJU backline that Henry Raymonds (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) chased down and buried in the net for a 1-0 lead.
Less than six minutes later Kevin Mesich (West Allis, Wis./West Allis Hale) received a pass from Joey Pumo (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) in the middle of the box and slid it past the SJU keeper to extend the Warhawk lead to 2-0.
The Johnnies countered with intense pressure over the next three and a half minutes and cut the Warhawk lead in half with a goal in the 25th minute.
SJU's Tommy Picka gave one last-ditched effort as the first half wore down, but Warhawk keeper Toney Anderson (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) made the save and the Warhawks headed into halftime with a 2-1 lead.
Saint John's wasted little time tying the match, scoring the equalizer 36 seconds into the second half.
Raymonds had a premium opportunity in the 60th minute, but SJU keeper Nicholas French denied consecutive shots by the junior midfielder to keep the game knotted at two.
Anderson stifled the Johnnies down the stretch and the game headed to overtime.
UW-W had the first quality opportunity in the extra period, but a header by Jake Santellano (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) on a corner by Kyle Clancy (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) was stopped before it crossed the goal line.
With less than a minute remaining in the first overtime, the Warhawks were whistled for a foul in the box and a penalty kick followed. SJU's Uriel Cordoba converted and the Johnnies won the match.
The Warhawks will remain in Minnesota until Sunday when they travel to Morris to take on the University of Minnesota Morris at 2 p.m.
