OT Thriller In Orange Beach
ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – No. 19 Arkansas fell to the No. 15-ranked Florida Gators in a thrilling 2-1 overtime decision at the Orange Beach Sportsplex on Sunday in the Razorbacks’ first appearance at the Southeastern Conference championship game since 1996.
Florida senior Savannah Jordan put the Gators on the board in the 28th minute for an early 1-0 lead that would stand until the 78th minute when Arkansas senior Alexandra Fischer equalized the match with a 22-yard chip-in that got past Gator keeper Kaylan Marckese.
A furious rally by both teams ensued in an attempt to finish the match in regulation, but the clock ticked down to zeroes to force overtime. Arkansas has been in overtime only once this year: The season-opener against James Madison – a match the Razorbacks won 4-3.
However, in the 99th minute of play, Florida’s Brooke Sharp headed in the winning goal to seal the win for the Gators. Arkansas would complete the tournament as runners-up and 17-5-0 overall as well as 8-3-0 in conference play.
Arkansas held an 11-10 edge in shots as well as a slight 5-4 advantage in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Cameron Carter earned two saves in the match.
Three Razorbacks – senior Lindsey Mayo, junior Hannah Neece and freshman Kayla McKeon – were selected into the SEC All-Tournament team. Mayo and McKeon accounted for two of Arkansas’ six goals in the tournament.
With the win, Florida improved to 15-4-1 overall and 8-3-0 in the SEC. The Gators would repeat as back-to-back conference champions and earn their 12th SEC Tournament title.
The Razorbacks will find out Monday afternoon if they earned a spot in the 2016 NCAA Tournament. The Selection Show will be streamed live on NCAA.com at 3:30 p.m. CT. The soccer team will be hosting a watch party at Sassy’s BBQ and Grill, located at 1290 Steamboat Drive, Fayetteville, AR 72704.
