Overtime goal downs Francis Marion 2-1
Birmingham, Ala. (Oct. 20, 2013) – Samford's Michelle Moll scored the game-winning goal in the 109th minute to lift the Bulldogs to a 2-1 victory over Francis Marion, Sunday afternoon in NCAA Division I women's soccer action in Birmingham, Ala.
The Patriots return to action this Tuesday (Oct. 22) when they travel to Orangeburg, S.C., to face South Carolina State University. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
Junior forward Chanel Harris scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season for FMU. Sophomore goalkeeper Taylor O'Berry made a match-high eight saves despite taking the loss.
After a scoreless opening half, the Patriots were first on the scoreboard with Harris' goal in the 51st minute. The Toronto, Ontario, Canada native took a pass from senior forward Yasmin Bunter, and fired a shot into the top right corner of the goal from 20 yards out. Bunter was credited with her team-leading seventh assist of the season.
Following the goal, Samford (11-4-1) had four shots in the next ten minutes, but the Patriot defense blocked away two of them, and O'Berry made a key save to keep the game at 1-0. However, the Bulldogs would tie the game off the foot of Malcanisha Kelley in the 78th minute. Kelley followed a shot from Moll that bounced off the left post, and put the ball in the back of the net.
FMU had a chance to take back the lead in the 86th minute off a corner kick by freshman Kelley Anthony, but the header shot by junior Elizabeth Asare went just left of the goal.
In the first overtime period, the Patriots had two shots in the second minute from Harris and junior Brittney Smith, but neither could convert the match-winner. O'Berry made three huge saves in the final four minutes of the first overtime to keep the match knotted at 1-1.
Through nine minutes in the second overtime, neither team could find the net and it looked as if the match would finish in a draw. However, with over a little more than a minute remaining, Moll fought her way into the middle of the box, and fired the game-winner into the right corner of the goal from about 10 yards out.
The Bulldogs held a 28-12 advantage on shots, and a 6-1 advantage on corner kicks. Samford's Dale Steinagle earned the victory in goal while making three saves.
