Overtime Goal Lifts Blugolds Past Falcons
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – The UW-Eau Claire women's soccer team picked up an important victory in the final regular season home game. They picked up a 2-1 overtime victory over UW-River Falls on Senior Day at Bollinger Field.
With the teams tied at 1-1 after regulation, the game went to overtime to decide a winner. The Blugolds (7-7-3, 4-3-1) wasted little time ending it, when Caroline Henderson (So.-Duluth, Minn./East) took a long pass from Tara Dennehy (So.-Eugene, Ore./Churchill) and put it past the Falcons' (6-9-1, 2-4-1) goalkeeper just 33 seconds into the extra frame.
It was a dramatic victory after the Blugolds fell behind in the first half. In the 37th minute, it was the Falcons that struck first, taking advantage of a corner kick. UW-River Falls held the lead to the end of the half, forcing the Blugolds to come-from-behind.
They finally broke through in the 61st minute, capitalizing on a corner kick of their own. A scrum ensued in front of the net of the Paige LeGate (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) corner kick. An Allie Stone (Sr.-Madison, Wis./Verona Area) header was initially stopped, but Teighlor Tvedt (Jr.-Verona, Wis./Verona) found the loose ball and put it home to tie things up at 1-1.
As the game wore on, the Blugolds started to wear down the Falcons, who used very few substitutions in the game. That set the stage for Henderson to send the Blugolds home victorious with the overtime goal.
Nina Behrenbrinker (Sr.-St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) made three saves to earn the victory. The Blugolds outshot the Falcons 14-5 and also led in corner kicks, 8-4.
Henderson received a yellow card late in the second half on an illegal substitution for the Blugolds. It was the only card of the game.
UW-Eau Claire will wrap up their regular season on Sunday. They will play Saint Benedict (Minn.) on the road at 3 p.m. They will then await the end of the WIAC season to find out where and who they will play in the first round of the conference tournament. The first round is scheduled to start on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
