Pantaleo named Offensive Player of the Week

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following a career game against Mount St. Mary's Friday, Lehigh women's soccer junior Tori Pantaleo has been named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week, as announced on Monday. Pantaleo tallied her first-career point (a goal) in the 38th minute Friday, finishing with two goals and one assist in the Mountain Hawks' dominant 7-0 victory.
Pantaleo's effort came in only 30 minutes of action off the bench as she scored a goal on both of her shots.. After firing a shot high past the goalkeeper in the 38th minute to make it 2-0, Pantaleo assisted on Lehigh's fifth goal of the evening (scored by sophomore Becca Sherry) at 70:31 and scored the sixth at 81:08. The Colts Neck, New Jersey native entered the season having played 24 games (six starts), firing 17 shots including eight shots on goal.
Also recognized on Monday were senior Ani Nahapetian and freshman Sabrina Mertz. Nahapetian stopped all six shots sent her way for her eighth-career shutout while Mertz scored two goals, including Lehigh's first goal of the season at the 18:51 mark. The goal got the Mountain Hawks off on the right foot, on the way to their most goals since Oct. 22, 2003 in a 9-0 win against Delaware State. Mertz also scored the first goal of the second half on Friday, making it 4-0 at 69:16 which opened the flood gates. Lehigh scored four goals in a stretch of 18:17 for the runaway victory.
The Mountain Hawks quickly return to action on Tuesday (5 p.m.) when they travel to Marist to face the Red Foxes, which begins a four-game road trip. Lehigh is looking to begin the year 2-0 for a second straight season after beginning 2014 by shutting out Binghamton (2-0) and Mount St. Mary's (1-0) in succession. The Mountain Hawks look to continue the momentum from Friday, which featured five different players scoring their first-career goals: Pantaleo, Mertz, Sherry, freshman Clare Severe and sophomore Lexi Chang. Sophomore Kendal Jacobus and senior Alex Sangiuliano both dished an assist for their first-career points.
Marist is 0-1-0 so far this season after dropping its season opener at Providence, 2-1. Trailing 1-0 at the half, the Red Foxes tied the score three minutes into the second half as Kristen Reilly scored a goal, assisted by Danielle Glazer before the Friars answered with the go-ahead goal. The Friars finished with a 19-10 edge in shots while Marist goalkeeper Makala Foley made five saves across the Providence's keeper, who made four. Marist graduated five seniors from last year's team, including top goal-scorers Amanda Epstein, Marjana Maksuti and Marissa Mertens.
Tuesday will mark the first meeting between Lehigh and Marist since the 2012 season which ended in an impressive 3-0 Mountain Hawks' shutout. This came over a Marist squad that was regionally-ranked. The Mountain Hawks are now 10-1-1 all-time against the Red Foxes. The teams first met in 1995, a 2-1 Lehigh victory. Marist's only win over Lehigh came during the 2011 season by a 2-1 final.
The Mountain Hawks return to action at Binghamton on Sunday at 1 p.m. Lehigh's next home game is Friday, Sept. 11 vs. Monmouth at 7 p.m.
