Panthers Bow Out of Postseason with 4-1 Setback
November 7, 2011
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Ohio Dominican''s men''s soccer team concluded the 2011 season Thursday afternoon as the second-seeded Panthers fell 4-1 to No. 3 seed Northwood (Mich.) in the first semifinal of the GLIAC Tournament.
ODU, the regular season GLIAC runner-up, finishes the year with a 9-6-3 mark, while Northwood improves to 9-4-3 and advances to the tournament championship on Saturday where they will meet the winner of Saginaw Valley State (Mich.) and Tiffin.
The Timberwolves got the scoring started at the 29:23 mark of the first as Matthew Howitt nailed a laser of a shot to the far side netting from about 30 yards deep. Less than two minutes later, Northwood found the net again as Joey Censoni ripped a straight-on look inside the box.
The Panthers got on the board moments later at the 34:02 mark as a Timberwolves handball in the box allowed junior Casey Weddle (Cincinnati, OH) to connect on penalty kick and his fourth score of the season.
With some momentum and poised for the comeback, ODU continued to control the tempo for the early goings of the second half, but a third Northwood score in the 63rd minute by Shaun Rydzewski helped seal the Panthers fate. After assisting on the first two goals, D.J. Evans added an insurance goal with just over six minutes remaining for the final tally.
The three-goal deficit was the worst since a 5-2 setback to Rio Grande back in 2008 and was the first loss in five meetings to Northwood on the pitch.
