Panthers Claim Chancellor’s Cup With 1-0 Win
GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Milwaukee men's soccer team outshot Green Bay by an overwhelming 13-to-1 margin on the night, but it was Magnus Flaatedal's goal in the 54th minute that provided the difference in a 1-0 victory Saturday evening at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
The Panthers (7-6-2, 4-2-1 Horizon League) played impressive defense all night against the Phoenix (3-9-2, 2-3-2 Horizon League), limiting their opponent to just a single shot in the contest – which did not come until the 70th minute – to claim the "Chancellor's Cup".
"It was obviously a great win for us tonight and for a couple of reasons," Milwaukee head coach Kris Kelderman said. "First and foremost, we got three points, which is big for us in the race in the conference. Playing against Green Bay is always a very emotional game. Green Bay is a tough place to play and we had some guys come through in some pressure situations."
Kelderman, who coached at Green Bay prior to arriving at Milwaukee, has been close to claiming the Chancellor's Cup before. His Panther teams have been in tough battles, only to see each game from 2012 through 2014 decided in double-overtime (0-1-2 in that stretch). The win is UWM's first in the series since 2011, the year that Cody Banks won it for the Panthers in the closing seconds of double-OT. The team retained possession in 2012 with an overtime draw.
"I thought we played very well the first half despite not scoring," Kelderman said. "Holding them to one shot, is very positive. And it was a great goal by Magnus. Lastly, we come home with the Chancellor's Cup, which is very exciting."
Flaatedal continues to come through for Milwaukee in his junior campaign, netting his third goal of the season at the 53:18 mark. Set up by a great crossing pass from Jamie Colin, Flaatedal took one touch before finishing calmly to the right of the keeper to break up the scoreless affair.
From there, the defense did the rest. The only shot allowed in the contest came from Green Bay at the 69:21 mark, saved by goalkeeper Oliver Haslund on the only opportunity he needed to step up for.
The Panthers dominated possession and opportunities over the first 45 minutes, earning a 6-0 advantage in shots in the first half while forcing a couple of tough saves.
It was more of the same in the second. Matthias Binder's shot attempt was saved in the 51st minute, but the Panthers kept pressing, getting Flaatedal's winner just minutes later.
In addition to the overwhelming shot advantage, UWM had four of the 10 corner kicks and was whistled for 11 of the 27 fouls. Flaatedal, Evan Conway, Matthias Binder and Nick Moon all accounted for two shots each to pace the offense. Kyle Ihn recorded five saves for the Phoenix.
The victory is also crucial for UWM in the conference standings, improving them to 4-2-1 in league play with two contests remaining. Up next is Milwaukee's final road game of regular season, traveling to Wright State next week Saturday. Game time is set for 6 p.m. CST.
