Panthers Cruise Past Penguins, 4-0
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Four different players scored goals to help the Milwaukee women's soccer team claim its fifth win in a row with a 4-0 shutout of Youngstown State University Saturday afternoon at Farmers National Bank Field.
The Panthers (11-4-2, 7-1-0 Horizon League) got a goal and two assists from Aubrey Krahn and a goal and assist from Jen Eberhardy to highlight the action against the Penguins (3-12-1, 1-7 Horizon League). Krahn's goal was part of a big day (1G/2A) and extends her goal-scoring streak to three consecutive games.
"It was a good showing for us today, as we were on the attack for majority of the game," Milwaukee head coach Troy Fabiano said. "We were able to give many players the opportunity to play and the level of play did not drop."
The win improves UWM to 8-1 in its past nine games and to 14-2 all-time against YSU. Fabiano had 24 different players on his roster see the field today.
The Panthers dominated the day on offense and defense. The shot count ended at 22-to-4, including a whitewash of 11-0 in the first half. Milwaukee also had eight of the nine corner kicks and only needed one save from the goalkeeping combination of Mallory Geurts (77:38/1 save) and Lauren Rice (12:22 playing time) to post its fourth clean sheet in the past five games and eighth of the season.
Eberhardy got the scoring started in the 14th minute, sending one to the far post from distance after a throw-in from Ashley Burkhardt was tapped her way by Krahn. The eventual game-winner marked the first of her career.
Lourdes Onwuemeka doubled the lead in the 28th minute, firing back across the goal mouth after Callie O'Donnell's service reached her at the left wing. The goal was her first of the year and came at the 27:31 mark.
Milwaukee continued to push out of the break, making it 3-0 on McKaela Schmelzer's third strike of the year. Again on a header, and again on a set piece, Schmelzer knocked in Krahn's free kick from near the left sideline at the 53:24 mark.
Krahn then finished up the scoring minutes later, finding herself open in the middle of the field following a pass from Eberhardy. She launched from around 35 yards away, beating the goalkeeper to the top side for her fourth goal of the season in the 61st minute.
That brings a conclusion to the road slate for the season. Up next will be the final home contest of the regular season for the Panthers, welcoming Cleveland State a week from today. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and will also be "Senior Day".
Saturday's affair could have a lot on the line, possibly a chance for UWM to lay claim to its 16th Horizon League regular-season title in the past 17 years – depending on the result of the NKU/WSU game midweek. Northern Kentucky is currently 5-1-1 in league play and has two games remaining. The Panthers are 7-1-0.
