Panther's Defeat St. Michael's, 1-0
Box Score
Colchester, VT – Earlier this afternoon, the women's soccer team took on the Purple Knights of St. Michael's College in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. As the game looked like it was about to head into overtime, the Panther's Kaitlin Monteith netted the game winner in the final seconds to send her team back to Garden City with the 1-0 victory. With the win, Adelphi advances to 5-2-1, 2-2-1 NE-10 while St. Michael's drops to 1-5-1, 1-3-1 NE-10.
In a tightly contested first half, both teams were evenly matched having three shots and two corner kicks apiece, but any attempt by either side was buried to keep the score at a 0-0 deadlock.
The Purple Knight's Carley Pestana was the first to put keeper Sam Whitney to the test, but was met with a save in the 28th minute. Less than 30 seconds later, Monteith returned the favor and gave opposing goal minder Kaylee Sullivan some actiont, but was met with the same result.
The other two shots by the Panthers were off their mark while the final two attempts by the Golden Knight's Cassie Crockett and Pestana late in the half were stopped by Whitney.
In the 50th minute, Emily Masiello connected with teammate Taylor Groth off of a corner attempt, but Groth's header attempt sailed just high of the net. Michelle Brown tried her luck at Sullivan, but could not get the ball past the keeper.
St. Michael's fired back with two quick attempts of their own as Crockett and Meagan Brady took shots within five seconds of each other, but Whitney made athletic saves on both to keep the game on a level playing field.
Finally, in the 90th minute with just 28 seconds remaining, the silence was broken. In a final charge down field, Monteith, from 20 yards out sent in a shot that was redirected off the defense to find the back of the net to close the books on a 1-0 victory.
In the tale of the tape, Adelphi had 13 shots, only three of which were on goal while their counterparts were more conservative with their shot selection, registering nine but made them count as eight of them were on target. The Panthers had a 3-2 corner advantage while Whitney had a busy day making eight stops with Sullivan making three for the hosts.
The Panthers are back in action on Wednesday, September 26 when they host the Greyhounds of Assumption College in a NE-10 matchup on Motamed Field at 4pm. You can watch the game live at www.aupanthers.tv or follow along with live stats found here.
