Panthers defeated by Western Illinois 2-1
GREEN BAY, WIS - The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team was defeated by Western Illinois 2-1 in a physical battle on Sunday afternoon.
After winning their first game of the Green Bay Tournament the Panthers came up just short in their second matchup of the weekend against the Western Illinois Leathernecks.
The Panthers found themselves playing from behind for nearly the entire game after the Leathernecks were able to begin the scoring in the 4th minute off of a failed corner kick. WIU's Sloane Levin received a pass from Amber Davis at the top of the box and was able to sneak the shot past UNI's Nicole Postel.
In the 56th minute of the second half the Leathernecks would extend their lead. Skyler Jessop touched a through ball to Tyra Markey who launched a shot from 18 yards out that got past a diving Postel.
Playing from behind the Panthers would turn up their offensive aggresiveness down the stretch, coming close to scoring multiple times. In the 79th minute UNI would get on the scoreboard when sophomore defender Sarah McHugh re-directed a deflection toward senior teammate Allie Brees who headed the ball in net for her first goal of the season.
Unfortunately the Panthers could not put another shot in net. UNI totalled 11 shots, 5 of which were on goal. Allie Brees, Maddie Welch, Claire Clark, Annie Dale, Sam Copley and Katie Witt all recorded at least one shot attempt.
Each team recorded four corner kicks for the game. WIU's goalkeeper Laura Atkinson earned the win with one goal against and six saves in 90 minutes. Panthers senior goalkeeper Nicole Postel suffered the loss with two goals against and six saves in her 90 minutes.
The Panthers will return home for their next match against Nebraska-Omaha on Friday, September 6th. Kickoff is at 7p.m.
Tournament Wrap-up:
