Panthers Double-Up Colonials
August 20, 2017
MOON TOWNSHIP, Penn. - Anna Smalley and Mackenzie Schill scored first half goals and goalkeeper Mallory Geurts recorded her second shutout of the weekend to lead the Milwaukee women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Robert Morris Sunday afternoon at North Athletic Complex.
The Panthers (1-0-1) got ahead of the Colonials (0-2-0) in the 10th minute and doubled their advantage with an insurance strike before intermission. The defense buckled down in the second half and did the rest, extending its season-opening scoreless streak to 200 minutes.
"Any time you go on the road, it is good to come away with win," UWM head coach Troy Fabiano said. "It was nice to see Smalley get an early goal and for Schill to score her first collegiate goal. It's early in the season and we still have a ways to go to consistently play to the level we expect from our team."
The first 10 minutes of the day featured just one shot by both teams combined, but the Panthers made the second one count.
Anna Portz fed a pass into the front of the goal. Aubrey Krahn got a foot on it to push it past the defense, finding Smalley on the wing. Smalley sent a left-footed shot to the far post, hitting the back of the netting to hand UWM the 1-0 lead at the 9:35 mark.
Krahn then hit the post in the 24th minute, but just over a minute later the lead was doubled on Schill's goal after she dribbled through traffic and sent a left-footed shot low and redirected on target at the 24:31 mark.
Milwaukee held a 10-4 shot advantage at the half but were unable to build on the lead. The second half was more evenly played, with UWM nearly making it 3-0 in the 64th minute when Saebryn Peel hit the crossbar.
The Colonials' best scoring chance came in the 75th minute, but Geurts was up to the task. She tipped a rifled shot off the crossbar and was able to gather herself quickly enough to make another save on the rebound. That flurry of action marked two of her four stops on the day.
Stats for the afternoon showed the Panthers with a 16-to-8 advantage in final shots (5-4 on goal), eight of the nine corner kicks and seven of the nine fouls. McKaela Schmelzer and Portz each tallied a team-best three shots.
Up next, the schedule takes the team to Missouri and Illinois next weekend, getting things underway Friday at Southeast Missouri. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
