Panthers Double-Up Sycamores, 2-0
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Jelena Sever scored a pair of second-half goals and Allie Strottman posted her first shutout of the season as the Milwaukee women's soccer team defeated Indiana State, 2-0, Friday night at Memorial Stadium.
The Panthers (3-0) found the back of the net in the second half, finally breaking through against the Sycamores (0-3) after a dominant first half that finished scoreless.
Sever scored a brilliant first goal, setting up the free kick and taking it quickly after the whistle. The defense in the wall ducked when Sever sent it forward, sneaking it inside the left post to make it 1-0 at the 49:21 mark.
After posting a commanding 10-to-1 shot advantage in the first half, it took less than five minutes out of the locker room to finally find a goal.
"I thought we managed the emotions and energy of their home opener well," head coach Troy Fabiano said. "They were in a defensive shape, but we stayed patient in the attack and found a couple of goals."
The second came under 10 minutes later, again a moment of brilliance from Sever. Rafferty Kugler found Gaby Schwartz streaking down the sideline from the midfield. Schwartz took two touches to advance the ball and sent service in front of goal. Sever left her feet to make the stop, popped back up and slotted the ball past the goalie with her left foot all in one motion.
That made it 2-0 in the 60th minute, which was all Strottman needed to close it out. She recorded her first collegiate shutout, making five saves on the night, including on a tough blast from distance in the final minutes to preserve the clean sheet.
The Panthers ended up with a 16-to-10 advantage in shots in the game, with the Sycamores actually edging them in shots on goal, 5-to-4. Kugler paced the offense with six shots, while Julia Barajas had three. The Panthers also finished with four of the six corner kicks in the match.
Sever netted her brace on just two shots in the game, playing 32 minutes.
Up next, MKE wraps up the weekend with a game at Eastern Kentucky Sunday. Game time is set to kick off at 12 p.m. CST.
