Panthers Fall On Overtime Penalty Kick, 1-0
RICHMOND, KY. – Kylie Thompson scored on a penalty kick in the 98th minute to send Eastern Kentucky past the Milwaukee women's soccer team, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at EKU Soccer Field.
The Panthers (3-1) had nearly twice as many shots on goal as their opponent on the day, but could not find the back of the net before the end of regulation. That allowed the Colonels (1-3) to get the contest to extra time and earn the PK that helped them pull off the upset.
Allie Strottman started the overtime session with a pair of nice saves, extending the game in the 92nd and 94th minutes. EKU sent a ball into the box in the 98th minute and, after it was cleared initially, a handball was called on the next pass back towards the goal front.
Thompson sent the ball into the right side at the 97:24 mark, handing Milwaukee just its second regular-season loss since the start of the 2017 campaign.
The game nearly changed on a pair of occasions down the stretch. Julia Barajas came close to breaking up the shutout, getting a left-footed attempt on the breakaway saved nicely at the post by the EKU keeper.
Strottman made a great save of her own in the 77th minute, punching a ball up-and-over the cross bar that looked to be sneaking in before her attempt.
The Colonels' Billie Clark made seven saves on the afternoon, including a brilliant stop of a Haley Johnson breakaway in the 24th minute.
Mackenzie Schill started the play in the defensive third, finding Barajas in the middle. Barajas sent a thru ball finding Johnson streaking downfield. After beating the final defender to the ball, she carried forward to the goal, sending a shot to the far post. Clark went to ground, using her left leg to somehow block the ball from heading into goal.
Eastern Kentucky ended up with a 17-14 advantage in shots on the afternoon, with the MKE defense allowing just four of the 17 shots to be on frame (Milwaukee had 7). The Panthers also earned five of the nine corners in the game, with McKenna Stratton pacing the offense with three shots.
Up next, the team is back home this weekend, welcoming Eastern Illinois Friday and Butler Sunday to Engelmann Stadium.
