Panthers Fall to SNHU, 1-0 in Season Finale
Box Score
Manchester, NH - The Adelphi women's soccer team traveled to Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester, New Hampshire on Sunday, November 4 to compete in the programs first ever Northeast-10 Championship final. The third ranked Penmen got on the board in the 25th minute and eighth ranked Panthers could not net the equalizer, falling 1-0.
The loss drops Adelphi to 11-7-3 overall and the Brown and Gold will find out at 7:30 pm on Monday if they are selected to participate in the 2012 NCAA Division II Championships. The Panthers were ranked ninth in last week's NCAA East Region poll, but took down second ranked AIC, 2-0 and eliminated eighth ranked Merrimack, 1-0 in the past week and are pursuing the programs 12th NCAA berth.
After some initial back and forth in the first half, the Penmen got on the board when a cross came into the Adelphi box and was touched into the back of the Panther net, putting the Brown and Gold down, 1-0. Adelphi did a quality chance in the first half, but Kaitlin Monteith's strike was turned aside.
The Panther offense generated just one shot attempt in the second half of play, and the Southern New Hampshire defense blocked the effort, securing the win 1-0. Overall the Penmen held a 14-3 advantage in shots, but the Adelphi attack managed to win the corner kick battle, 6-2. Sam Whitney did keep Adelphi in the game, making six stops on the day.
Emily Masiello and Whitney were named to the Northeast-10 All-Tournament Team for their efforts throughout the playoffs.
Adelphi will now wait on the announcement of the field for the 2012 NCAA Division II Tournament, which will occur at 7:30 pm, Monday, November 5 at www.ncaa.com.
