Panthers Find A Way To Take 1-0 Victory
MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team made an own goal stand up in claiming a 1-0 victory over the University of Detroit Saturday evening at Engelmann Stadium.
The Panthers (9-3-2, 6-0-0 Horizon League) continue to find ways to win, using the miscue by the Titans (6-7-2, 2-3-1 Horizon League) to run their current winning streak to five games and their unbeaten streak to six (5-0-1) in a row as well.
"We have been fortunate to find different ways to win," Milwaukee head coach Troy Fabiano said. "And tonight we were able to get a result not playing our best. I was proud on how we battled through the first half, and in the second half I felt we were able to settle down and create more scoring opportunities."
The only score of the night came just after intermission. Junior Callie O'Donnell took control of the ball near midfield and fed sophomore Sydney Senn, who was streaking down the left sideline. Senn sent service into the penalty area and a backline defender, in an attempt to control the ball, redirected it into the net at the near post at the 46:18 mark.
From there it was all defense again, as the team posted its sixth shutout of the season. It was also the third clean sheet in a row and the fourth in the last five outings.
Junior Paige Lincicum did everything she needed to do, making one relatively easy first-half save and directing the defense from there to claim her fourth blanking of an opponent in 2015. It also increase her scoreless streak to 325:10 on the season.
Milwaukee came out first with the early pressure, forcing three early corner kicks but the only shot was a close-range attempt by junior Maria Stephans that was blocked.
A midfield battle for most of the first 45 minutes, senior Kelsey Holbert's attempt from 25 yards after a nice buildup from sophomore Jen Eberhardy and Stephans flew just wide in the 18th minute.
The team nearly added a late insurance strike when Senn set up sophomore Maddie Tetzke on a counter attack. Tetzke took a touch to create space but had her attempt pushed just over the cross bar with just over a minute remaining on the night.
For the game, UWM ended with a 13-to-8 advantage in shots and also a slim 3-1 edge in shots on target. It also forced 12 of the 16 corner kicks on the night and was whistled for nine of the 17 fouls. Holbert paced the offense with four shots. Stephans, Tetzke and sophomore Aubrey Krahn all finished with two each.
Up next, the Panthers remain at home for the second of three straight at Engelmann Stadium, welcoming Valparaiso University Wednesday evening. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
